Adaptive Living Guide for Life With Multiple Disabilities

Imagine needing to adapt almost every aspect of your daily life to navigate a unique combination of health conditions. This week on Water Prairie Chronicles, we had the profound privilege of speaking with Ally Pack-Adair, a true expert in adaptive living. Facing cortical visual impairment (CVI), mitochondrial disease, autism, ADHD, and chronic illnesses, Ally doesn’t just cope – she thrives through ingenious adaptations and a resilient spirit.

Ally provided a deeply personal look into her world of adaptive living, showcasing how she creatively manages her complex health needs. From relying on her dedicated home health nurse for essential daily activities to meticulously using planners to track her medical journey, her life is a testament to proactive self-management.

A central theme of our conversation was the power of adaptive technology. Ally enthusiastically shared her experiences with a range of tools that enhance her independence in her adaptive living journey. We learned about specialized scissors that allow her to continue her passion for arts and crafts, adaptive nail clippers that restore a sense of control, and even custom 3D-printed silverware designed for future needs. Her appreciation for everyday adaptive solutions like her Easy Hold Grips toothbrush and a simple phone loop underscored how even minor adjustments can significantly improve quality of life in adaptive living.

For those with unique sensory needs, Ally offered invaluable insights into adaptive sensory strategies. From the comforting weight of her lavender-scented dinosaur and a weighted lap pad – key components of her adaptive living toolkit – to the soothing effects of aromatherapy and the focused engagement provided by her collection of “fidget friends,” Ally demonstrated the importance of understanding and meeting one’s sensory requirements for successful adaptive living.

Beyond these tangible adaptations, Ally highlighted the significance of adaptive approaches to well-being. Her engagement in adapted hobbies like adult coloring books and the mindful process of LEGO building showcased her ability to find joy and relaxation through modified activities. We also explored the therapeutic power of music therapy as an adaptive tool for emotional well-being.

Ally’s journey is a powerful illustration of adaptive living in its truest sense. It’s about more than just finding tools; it’s about a mindset of creativity, resourcefulness, and unwavering self-advocacy. Her willingness to share her personal experiences offers invaluable lessons for anyone navigating health challenges and seeking to embrace adaptive living to its fullest.
